SCALABRINIANS IN VICTORIA

Victoria is the second state in Australia for inflow of immigrants. About 23 percent of immigrants arriving to Australia settle in Victoria. The Scalabrinians established the first mission in Victoria toward the end of the 1950s, with the parish of All Saints in Fitzroy, later left for St. Brigid's in North Fitzroy. Other missions were established in Shepparton and Lalor. In Melbourne, the Italian Catholic Federation, a lay movement among Italian migrants, was initiated in the early 1960s, and later the Italian Catholic Resource Centre. The concern for the ageing migrants led to the opening of the San Carlo Nursing Home and GV Homes for the Aged in South Morang, and the involvement for a short period in the St. Francis of Assisi Hostel and Nursing Home in Rosanna. Chaplaincies for Spanish and Portuguese speaking immigrants, as well as for Filipinos, are part of the current Scalabrinian ministry in the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
