SCALABRINIANS IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines developed an overseas labor program in the early 1970s, to respond to the economic recession caused by the oil crisis. Migrant workers found employment in the Middle East at the time of major project construction. From a few thousands, the annual deployment of Filipino migrants quickly increased to over 300,000 in the early 1980s.
At the end of the construction phase, the composition of the flow changed, as construction workers gave way to maintenance and service workers. After a decline in the middle of the 1980s and the setback caused by the Gulf War in the early 1990s, migration to the Middle East resumed strongly in the mid-1990s, to decrease recently.
In the meantime, development in the tiger economies of East and Southeast Asia provided an alternative overseas labor market. Migration to Asian countries is more characterized by employment in the service sector and the participation of women.
The presence of the Scalabrinian Missionaries in the Philippines initiated in 1982, as an outcome of the concern for the transformation in migration flows by the group of missionaries in Australia. The Scalabrinians took up the mission in the Philippines to sensitize the local Church and society to the problems of migrants and to invite dedicated persons to become involved in the concerns for migrants in the region.
Currently, the missionaries are involved in the care of seafarers, the assistance to departing Filipinos and to refugees, the formation program of young missionaries, the service of the local Church to migrants and activities of research and publication.
