SCALABRINIANS IN TAIWAN

Migration to Taiwan started in the late 1980s in response to demand for labor in small industries. However, without an official immigration policy, the flow was mostly of workers who entered as visitors and remained after the expiration of their visa. At the end of the 1980s it was estimated that close to 50,000 migrants were working in Taiwan.
An official immigration policy was adopted in 1991 to overcome scarcity of labor in the private sector as well as in public works, such as major infrastructure projects. Immigration was limited to four countries, namely Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. In a few years, migrant workers in Taiwan have reached 270,000, mostly from Thailand - employed particularly in construction and manufacturing - and the Philippines - working in manufacturing and services.
The Scalabrinian Missionaries started their mission in Taiwan in 1994, when two missionaries were sent to Taipei. After an initial period to study the language and coming in contact with the migrant communities, the missionaries are now dedicating their services as chaplains to the migrants in the Migrant Desk of the archdiocese of Taipei and in the church of St. Christopher.
A second group of missionaries was sent to Kaohsiung in 1996 to minister to seafarers in the Stella Maris Mission and as chaplains to the migrants of that diocese.
