SCALABRINIANS IN QUEENSLAND

The care for the Italian immigrants employed in the sugar cane fields of North Queensland was among the first mission entrusted by the Australian Church to the Scalabrinian Missionaries. A mission was initially established in Silkwood and the surrounding towns. It then expanded to Walkerston, near Mackay, with activites as far south as Bundaberg. With the dwindling of migrant workers in the North, those missions were returned to the local Church, and the activites of the Salabrinians are now radiating from a mission in Brisbane.
