SCALABRINIANS IN NEW SOUTH WALES

The New South Wales absorbes more than 40 percent of all immigration to Australia. This trend has continued for some time and makes it the primary state of intended residence for immigrants. Thus it was just natural that the Scalabrinians established a mission in NSW from the very beginning of their presence in Australia.
The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Unanderra, a suburb of Wollongong, was finished in 1954, only two years after the arrival. Later, the Center in Wollongong was opened, followed by the Parish of St. Francis de Sales in Surry Hills, Sydney. The dedication to the care of Italian migrants led to a mission in more remote areas, such as Lismore, in the North of NSW, among the tobacco growers, and to a parish in the multicultural environment of Dee Why. The center for Italians and later the chaplaincy in the port of Newcastle were further developments. More recently, the mission for Italians and Spanish speaking was taken up in Liverpool, while the concern for the ageing and ailing migrants led to the establishment of the Scalabrini Village in Austral, with branches in various places.
